About the Programme

Designed for students from a non-computing background, this programme will develop your key knowledge and technical skills that you can apply immediately in the workplace. You will learn how to gather and analyse information to make data-driven decisions, and how intelligent systems can be used across a range of contexts. 

Your learning will be supported by the cutting-edge research into the field by the University of Liverpool, who is a world leader in data science and artificial intelligence research. Our Digital Innovation Facility, opening in 2021, will provide a purpose-built environment for cutting-edge research into multiple academic disciplines including AI, robotics and data analytics. 

You will have access to an online development environment to practice and refine your new technical skills, which also contains all of the technologies and software you will need for the course – inclusive within your tuition fee. 

Throughout the course you will be encouraged to apply your new skills to a range of real-world challenges, and upon completion you will be prepared to research, create and implement solutions to technical problems within your future career. 

What is Data Science and Artificial Intelligence?

One of the most exciting areas of computer science is data science and artificial intelligence. Both of these fields study the applications of data in modern businesses and modern engineering, with artificial intelligence focused on using data to develop intelligent systems that can think and learn for themselves.

Developers, engineers, analysts and scientists all have a role to play in the data science and machine learning sector. Most of these positions start with getting the right education, such as a master’s in data science, to give them the complex scientific knowledge needed to thrive in the industry.

This programme consists of the following modules. You are required to complete 180 credits to achieve a full Master of Science (MSc), 120 credits to achieve the postgraduate diploma (PGDip), and 60 credits to achieve the postgraduate certificate (PGCert).
  • Global Trends in Computer Science (15 credits)
  • Mathematics and Statistics for Data Science and AI (15 credits)
  • Software Development in Practice (15 credits)
  • Databases and Information Systems (15 credits)
  • Elective modules: choose three:
    • Reasoning and Intelligent Systems (15 credits)
    • Machine Learning in Practice (15 credits)
    • Multi-Agent Systems Robotics (15 credits)
    • Deep Learning (15 credits)
    • Natural Language Processing and Understanding (15 credits)
  • Research Methods in Computer Science (15 credits)
  • Computer Science Capstone Project (60 credits)
Applicants should possess either:
  • A minimum of a 2:2 class degree in a suitable technical subject other than Computer Science or IT, equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree, coupled with two years’ experience in employment; or
  • Professional work experience and/or other prior qualifications, which will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
All applicants must provide evidence that they have an English language ability equivalent to an IELTS (academic) score of 6.5. If you don’t have an IELTS or equivalent certificate, you can take our free online English test to assess your proficiency. You don’t need to prove your English ability if you are a national of, or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in, any of these countries.
  • MSc: £15,300 These fees* are fully inclusive of all costs, including all teaching materials, core textbooks, assessments and resits.

There are a range of opportunities within this fast-growing field for those trained in data science and artificial intelligence – and you will also be prepared for roles in other computer science settings. You may also choose to apply your new learnings to interdisciplinary roles related to your undergraduate degree or professional background. Suitable roles may include data analyst, data scientist, database manager, machine learning practitioner and IT consultant. Alongside the subject-specific knowledge you will gain during the programme, you will also develop professional skills such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking and research. These will enhance your CV, allowing you to improve your career prospects and access more senior roles.
